The importance of adaptability and interpersonal skills to IT professionals

What comes to your mind when we talk about being as IT professionals? Having high knowledge as higher as a doctor? Having so many work experiences? Or having a good looking appearance? Ya… everyone can voice out their opinions but the truth is adaptability together with interpersonal skills is the two important keys to success at work place.

So, what adaptability is all about?

Adaptability is the ability to change (or be changed) to fit changed circumstances [source: loveleague.com]. In my point of view, adaptability is a must behaviour that each of individual should has in order to survive in today’s job market. This kind of behaviour included in long life learning process. Why? Because, IT professionals have to keep enriching their knowledge with the changes of technology which is highly unstable. As we know that, there are always changing at work place and the new competitors keep coming with more and more expertise. Due to this, IT professionals are required to be more flexible and dynamic to deal with this phenomenon.
Is it enough to have adaptability in order to be IT professionals?

Absolutely no, there is this skill that IT professionals tend to forget when they already have enough knowledge, it is interpersonal skills. An interpersonal skill is the ability to interact with people around and it is also included your personality awareness, communication skills, conflict management, and trust building. As we all know that IT professionals deal with many people including clients, employers, and suppliers and so forth. So, again, IT professionals are highly required to have this skill in order to communicate with others as well as to avoid miscommunication that might occur in the work place.

From the two explanations above, we can say that it is not an easy to be IT professionals but it is also not difficult if we keep learning and updating ourselves with the new invention or technology. We also need to show up our understanding toward others by improving our interpersonal skills in a professional way. To me, being a professional is in YOU, yourself! It just a matter of knowing your true ability to start the things on to change you and your world!
